Soul Reapers and the New Chaos Marine Codex part 1

$

I like everyone else have been waiting for the release of the new codex Chaos Space Marines for the last few months, I had really high hopes. Unlike your average chaos marine player on the planet I as y’all know, took matters into my own hands and created codex Soul Reapers to fix the problems I had with the last codex.

My hopes for the new codex were of the thought I could drop almost everything in my Soul Reapers codex and make it basically a character and a couple of special units for the Soul Reapers supplemental mini-dex.

Most of these hopes were dependent on what they did with the non-cult units in the codex and from early rumors I was really excited and thought that they finally realized that the basic Chaos Marine was over-priced compared to every other marine unit in 40k.

Well the codex is out and it seems it is business as usual at GW; the basic chaos marine is going to remain a poor cousin to every other marine in 40k. Now I am not saying that the Chaos Space Marine codex is bad, because it is full of options and that is a great thing.

On the other hand I really believe that having a large amount of options is not going to save you if you do not focus on cult troops or buying an expensive icon for Fearless that can be sniped. Without Fearless troops I honestly believe that you are going to struggle uphill in the late game.

Some of this is caused by the extremely background driven Champion of Chaos rule, but this is a case where background hurts the army in game. It also sets the sun on the Power Fist Champion, cause in a challenge you want to strike at initiative if you only have one wound.

Phil did get it right with the lowered cost on Raptors and Bikes, which is a real gem that finally makes Chaos fast attack choices worthwhile. I think we will see Bikes a bit more than Raptors because they are the clear winner choice in the codex in the points reduction department.

So with all that said I have decided to go with the minimalist approach for the Soul Reapers anyway. I will however allow any units to purchase the old Fear is for the Weak rule from the older versions of the Soul Reapers project.

Next time I will look at what will be remaining in the mini-dex, the additions to the Armory and revamped psychic powers.

Soul Reapers and the New Chaos Marine Codex part 2

So here is part 2 of my series about the interaction of the new Chaos codex and the Soul Reapers. I have dropped all the the Soul Reapers entries for the Basic Chaos marine entries to slim out the codex back to a mini-dex. I am still debating dropping the Reaver squads and allowing the Reapers to take Khorne Berzerkers to represent these maniacs.

I will not be dropping the Dreadnought entry however; I will not call my Dread a Hellbrute ever, but I will adopt the new crazed rules, which are  a total step up from every version so far.

So lets look at some of the changes I am making the Soul Reapers special rules, additional icons and their psychic discipline. All of these changes are in the early stages and have only seen the tabletop 3 times so far.

Fear is for the Weak: The Soul Reapers have been in the service of Chaos for ten millennia and are driven by the knowledge that the Dark Gods watch over them.

Soul Reapers are subject to the Stubborn USR found on page 76 of the MRB. Additionally they always use their unmodified leadership even when they attempt to regroup if the squad has been reduced less than half strength through casualties.

Any squad in a Soul Reapers army may purchase Fear is for the Weak for one point per model; Independent Characters can take it for 5 points.

Icon of Perpetual War for 10 points: The Soul Reapers bear this icon have been slaughtering their enemies with ease and brutal precision for millennia.

A unit that bears this Icon gains the Crusader USR.

Note: All units in a Soul Reapers army that can take icons in the Codex Chaos Space Marines may choose to take the Icon of Perpetual War for the points listed above.

Soul Reapers Psychic Discipline

Primaris Power

Imbuement of Chaos: Any friendly squad that is affected is imbued with the raw power of the Warp; this allows them to easily shred the toughest armor as if it were paper.

This power is a Blessing.

Pick any friendly unit within 12 inches including the caster himself; all affected models gain the Rending USR on all close combat attacks until the casting players next turn.

Warp Charge 1

1-2: Chains of Torment: The Apostle creates small warp rifts under his foes, launching ethereal chains that rend flesh to the bone in an attempt to drag the targets into the warp.

The Chains of torment is a Witchfire power with the following profile.

Range
Strength
AP
Type
12
5
-
Blast, Strikedown, Blind

Warp Charge 1

3-4: Warp Lightning: The Apostle shoots powerful bolts of lightning from his fingertips, arcing into the enemy leaving a wake of incinerated bodies.

Warp Lightning is a Witchfire power  with the following profile.

Range
Strength
AP
Type
36
8
4
Assault D3+1

Warp Lightning will ‘Arc’ into the nearest enemy unit within 6 inches; this will only happen if all the hits scored against the target unit cause wounds (before any saves are rolled); if the target is a vehicle all the hits must either glance or penetrate to ‘Arc’.

Warp Charge 2

5-6: Daemonic Terror: The sorcerer sends unhinging visions of the warp into his foes mind that debilitate them in combat.

Daemonic Terror is a Malediction power with a range of 24 inches.

The target unit loses D3 from its leadership value, it may not conduct Overwatch fire and all of its close combat attacks become unwieldy until the Sorcerers next turn.

New Years Soul Reapers codex update

Happy New Year people!

With a new year we need an updated new version of the Soul Reapers Codex. There are lots of subtle changes.

The biggest change is the removal of the Cohort Tactics from the individual Characters and made a coherent centralized listing for them. This is in a similar style to what was done in the 6th ed Codex Space Marines.
I have removed the cultists from the book replacing them with Heretic squads that may be lead by a Soul Reapers Aspiring Champion.

There are some new upgrade options for some squads like Teleport homers and Chain Axes. These are fluffy for the Soul Reapers and quite frankly Chaos Marines in general.

The Dark Legion observations: Warzone Resurrection

$

After months of trying things out here are my observations on playing the Dark Legion in WZR.

This army functions best as a synergistic force, each unit has a strength and almost all of them work better in cooperation with the others.

Seriously you need to preplan your synergy when building your list and be very mindful of unit placement during deployment. The list gets even more brutal when playing the advanced game with the Dark Legion card deck. I affectionately call it the “Screw You” deck, cause that is what you will be doing to your opponents units! I will discuss the card deck in a future post.

Warlords and Heroes

Alakhai as a Warlord is Solid, but you cannot just run him off looking for combat, he will get shot up if not well supported. His Summon the Darkness ability is phenomenal, sure it costs 4 Res, but early in the game it is the perfect spoiler to keep your army alive while you maneuver into position.

Valpurgius is the Bee’s Knees of Warlords although he is the most expensive and most squishy in melee. His access to the Dark Symmetry powers makes him worth his weight in gold. He can really boost the Dark Legion units like no other and is a great debuffer to the opponents units. You just have to keep him protected to make him effective.

Golgotha is an excellent support hero although she can be a Warlord as well; her passive boosts make the tough Legion units very resilient!

Troops

Legionnaires are fantastic for tying up shooting units in melee. I would not bother bringing a unit of less than 8; they just are not resilient enough to survive long with only 5 models.

Necromutants are pretty solid all rounder’s and my buddy hates when I get into close combat with them. Since even when they are killed they are dangerous! Don’t forget to try out the Grenade of Flies against units without flamers. Hit an enemy unit with the grenades then assault that unit with large squads of Legionnaires.

Support

Razides are very good with there Passive: Unstoppable rule meaning they ignore all cover modifiers. That rule is why I will always run at least a pair of them.

Praetorian Stalkers are fantastic shooters with their Scythes of Semai, plus the augmentation of the flamer is money in the bank.

Praetorian Behemoths are a giant rocket magnet, which is good and what he is there for. His Unstoppable Charge is brutal on your unsuspecting enemies; this ability will force your opponent to spread out if he is paying attention; if not he will next time! The Keg grenade is a fantastic synergy weapon. He hits the enemies then you mop them up with you lesser squads since the enemy armor value will be halved.

Help Save S.O. Killzone

Special Operations Killzone needs your help. I am not currently playing much in the way of 40k at all; I have been more involved in 30k for a while now. Couple this with the fact that I have been heavily involved working on stuff for Warzone Resurrection and the cost of the rapidly releasing 40k codices and you might understand why Codex Operatives is woefully out of date. On top of that I am getting constantly emailed telling me that the Codex Ops is out of date.

Basically it boils down to the fact that I do not have the time or am willing to spend the money to keep the Codex Operatives updated or any idea of when I might be able to tackle such a project on my own.

If SO Killzone has any hope of getting properly updated it will only be through the help of the community. The main rules are set and good to go as is, but the codex operatives needs a 6th ed update for everything after Dark Angels.

I have asked for help in the past and even had a few people say that they were gonna help, which is great, but this time around if you volunteer you need to have the initiative to get these things rolling without me assigning a task; I am very busy currently and do not have the time to micromanage the project.

What needs doing and what are you looking for? Codex: Daemons, Tau, Eldar, Space Marine, Sisters of Battle and Tyranids need doing. You need to look for special rules and Wargear that will mess with the one man unit dynamic of SO Killzone.

If you are willing to help out email me at galaxynflames @ gmail dot com

With your help Special Operations Killzone can thrive in 2014!

War without end: the Mutant Chronicles universe

$

The Solar System is a battlefield. From Mars' red deserts to the steaming jungles of Venus, conflict rages. From the huge caverns of the Mercurian underworlds to the cold hells of the Asteroid Belt, battle lines are drawn. The great megacorporations make war on each other. The fanatic soldiers of the Brotherhood clash with the undead warriors of the Dark Legion, who, in the names of their demonic masters, seek to conquer all who live. There is no peace. There are only small gaps between wars, when the combatants seek to rebuild their strength before another cataclysmic clash with their eternal enemies.

The Megacorporations

Where once there were nations, now there are only corporations. They rule the inhabited worlds. Everything is driven by their relentless quest for dominance and profit. The megacorporations are gigantic entities, fiscal titans who bestride the worlds of humanity, bending everything from foodstuffs to firearms. Their workforces are numbered in the billions. Their wealth is beyond counting. Their conflicts shake the tortured planets with their violence.

To be an employee of a corporation is to be part of a way of life and to commit yourself body and soul to a cause. Every moment of every day, the citizens and workers are bombarded by the propaganda of their employers. They are told that only their corporation is right, that only their way of life is good.

The citizens of democratic Capitol know that they are free and that all others seek to destroy their freedom. Capitol's huge armies are commited to defending that freedom.

The subjects of Bauhaus' Four Elector Dukes know that they are surrounded by enemies who covet their wealth and their technical superiority. The generals of Bauhaus' military orders work hard to ensure that their wealth is preserved.

Those who serve Mishima's Lord Heirs know that only they understand the true meaning of honor and that the universe is full of those who seek to take advantage of the strife in their ancient dominions. The Samurai stand ready to give their lives in defense of those lands.

The clansfolk of Imperial are just as certain that only the strong survive, and by their conquests, they prove their strength.

The enigmatic employees of Cybertronic know that they are the focus of universal hate and that all seek their destruction. To succeed, their enemies must overcome their cybernetically enhanced defenders.

So conflicts are bred. So wars are born. In a time of economic catastrophe and scarce resources, these beliefs are enough to drive millions to war.

The Brotherhood

Rising above the wars of the corporations are the members of the Brotherhood, the spiritual guardians of humanity. At the head of the Brotherhood stands the Cardinal, the most powerful man in history, a being of enormous spiritual, moral and temporal power. He is served by countless billions. Missionaries spread his word, Inquisitors hunt down his heretical enemies. Seers wield the strange mystical powers of the Art in his name. Countless soldier-fanatics are ready to die at his command.

Faith in the Cardinal is the last remaining glue that binds humanity together. People of nearly every corporation (with the notable exception of Cybertronic) attend sermons in the towering Cathedrals on the walls of which the eternal truths of the Chronicles are inscribed. Citizens of every corporation heed his message of hope and redemption. They all need something to believe in, for the times are dark.

The Dark Legion

Those who serve the Dark Apostles are the eternal enemies of all humanity. The numberless hordes of the Dark Legion raise their gigantic Citadels on all the worlds of humanity. Undead warriors swarm against the armies of humanity and force even the fallen to serve them. Countless Heretics infest every corner of human society and spread their message of corruption and rebellion, fostering wars between megacorporations, spreading distrust and hatred among humanity.

They serve Ilian, the Schemer, Mistress of the awesome mystical power of the Dark Symmetry. They revere Algeroth, Apostle of War, Master of the Dark Technology. They heed the lies of Semai, Apostle of Spite, who turns sibling against sibling. They dance to the insane tune of Muawijhe, Lord of Madness. They revel in the abominable foulness of Demnogonis, Apostle of Corruption. These mighty beings serve a greater master, the ultimate source of all evil, the Dark Soul.

The Apostles are not only the enemies of humanity, but of each other. Their minions often skirmish in battles for leadership and dominion. Thus are even more battles fought. Thus is yet more blood spilled.

The Cartel

In the face of unrelenting attacks from the Dark Legion, even the megacorporations have declared an uneasy and sporadic truce. So mighty are the servants of the Dark Apostles that they have forced the corporations to band together to oppose them. Thus was formed the Cartel, a cooperative organization which acts in the name of all the megacoprorations, seeking to maintain a fragile peace and coordinate operations against the Dark Legion. The greatest servants of the Cartel are the legendary Doomtroopers, recruited from the finest warriors of all the corporations, trained to a peak of perfection inconceivable to lesser mortals.

So far, the Cartel's success has been mixed. It has managed some triumphs against the Dark Legion, but has completely failed to keep the peace among the megacorporations. Indeed, it is more a vehicle for negotiating temporary cessations in hostilities than a true representative of human unity. Still, in offers the only fragile hope that a united humanity can stand against the darkness.

The Warzones

On all the inhabited worlds of the Solar System, there are warzones - huge areas of conflict where the megacorporations and the Dark Legion clash.

On Mercury, fiefworld of ancient and honorable Mishima, hundreds of small guerrilla wars are fought between the representatives of the megacorporations as they seek control of the huge, underworld caverns and the incredible mineral wealth these contain.

In the jungles of Venus, human armies besiege the towering Citadels that rise above the primordial jungle while the megacorporations make war against each other for possession of the riches of the Graveton Archipelago.

Amid the ruins of southern Mars, the soldiers of all the great powers fight for what remains of the most fertile region in the system, even though the canals are dry and the great desert once more encroaches.

Amid the tiny worldlets of the asteroid belt, fierce battles are fought between Imperial and the Dark Legion. These conflicts are all the more savage because of the restricted areas they are fought in.

On no world is there peace, nor is there any prospect of it. This is an age of war, in which humanity fights for survival and only the cunning and the mighty can hope to triumph. This is an age in which sharp reflexes and good weapons make the difference between life and death.

I'd like to give a shout out and thanks to my buddy Neuicon for saving me from having to type this all out from the books. Check out his Mutant Chronicles blog, Tales from the Warzone.

Why you should consider skirmish gaming

$
0
0

This is a re-post from my article yesterday on Dark Future Gaming:

Skirmish games are typically played with small armies of miniatures ranging from 5-30 miniatures per side. This makes entry into a skirmish game really easy. The games themselves are usually more detail oriented mechanics wise as well; because the forces are smaller the complexity of the game can be increased without bogging down gameplay.

Killzone at Adepticon 2011, thanks to Brian from A Gentleman's Ones Blog for the pic

Some people will disagree with me on the following, these people will ardently argue that my Micro skirmish category is the only true skirmish game, but this is my opinion. I put skirmish games into 3 categories, Micro, Macro and Scaleable skirmish.
Micro skirmish games are the ones where your force is made up of anywhere between 5 and 15 models, each model usually acts on its own even if part of a “unit.” Typically a Micro skirmish game can be completed in around forty-five minutes or less.

Macro skirmish games are the ones where your force is made up between 15 to around 30 models, sometimes the models act as units and the better ones allow models to act on their own even if part of a unit. These types of games can run anywhere from an hour to ninety minutes depending on the complexity of the system.
Scaleable skirmish games are my favorite by far as they straddle the line between Micro and Macro games. This allows you the gamer to choose how small or large you want your games to be. Both versions of Killzone and Warzone are all Scaleable skirmish games!
So to answer my own question “why skirmish gaming?” it is the easy entry in monetary and hobby outlay; with the added benefit of having fast paces small games that do not take up a lot of time. Sometimes it is just nice to have a force for a game that is painted to a higher standard than you would never consider doing in an army level game like 40k. Plus on top of that you can also go to town converting and modeling your minis to make each one be unique from the rest; this is actually one of my favorite things about skirmish.

Skirmish games also tent to be much more tactical in the gameplay, since you do not have the resources to just throw away a unit, you must seriously consider each of your actions to effectively use your units to complete the mission at hand.

Another of Brian's amazing tables!
Another thing that is really cool is the terrain making opportunities that you have with skirmish gaming that would just be impractical in a battle game (like 40k) setting. Terrain is also infinitely more important in a skirmish game than a battle one; if you play a skirmish game on a standard 25% terrain 40k table it will devolve into a shooting gallery and the side with the strongest shooting will typically run rough shod over other lists.

In my next post I will cover the importance of terrain in skirmish gaming.

Until Next time, keep your powder dry and lead flying!

The importance of terrain in skirmish games

$

What makes skirmish games different from other miniature tabletop games is the way your models interact with the terrain on the tabletop. Experienced skirmish gamers know that terrain is an extremely important part of having a successful game. It is important to have multiple levels of terrain and having places to hide are both very important; it also adds a very realistic feeling.
Battlesystems starship or military complex table
Your strategy should evolve from the terrain present in your game. Having multiple levels of terrain makes the game interesting and adds to your strategy. There is nothing more realistic and evocative than placing a sniper on the highest point on the board with a good viewpoint of the tabletop. Plus from this vantage point he may be able to ignore some terrain since at this elevation the terrain may be too low to affect the snipers shots as you are looking at your target from above.

City fight table from the Grunts website
My general rule of thumb when setting up a skirmish gaming table it to make sure that at least 60% of the surface area is covered in terrain of some sort! With this terrain density you can get a really great tactically deep game.

Infinity demo table from the interwebz
No matter in what kind of terrain your game is taking place on you should always have plenty of cover. If you are playing on ruined city streets you should be able to gain cover peeking around corners or hiding behind piles of rubble. Realistically you want to have protection for incoming fire. It is almost always better to get your models into cover suffering any movement penalties than to stay out in the open to move at your full move rate. In my opinion it is better to play smart using every ounce of cover to your advantage than to rush in and get your units killed.
Another fantastic thing about skirmish gaming terrain is that if you are a clever modeler you can have close quarters firefights within buildings. Fighting room by room is a fantastically tense and fun thing to do in skirmish gaming. It can be done with battle level games but is not very practical to do well above the skirmish level.

My very close friend Brian and his friends have created a new game company called Anvil 8 Games. They are about to unleash their first game on the world via Kickstarter tomorrow on April 1st, here is some info and art for this great new gaming universe!

Aetherium is a tabletop miniatures board game played on customized battle map and schematic tile system that responds directly to the will of the players during the game. Players control one of two evocative factions and battle across a profound virtual landscape. Aetherium unfolds with a dynamic and intuitive “one roll” combat system.

We have compiled a series of story driven scenarios to take you through the game itself, but the unique structure ensures that no two experiences, no two games, can ever be the same.

In the Aetherium, players will:

- Remain constantly engaged in an alternating activation sequence that never pauses for conventional turns.

- Strategically program activation cards in order to anticipate your opponent’s movement, and to sequence your software as you lead your team on a bold run into the Aetherium.

- Control between 10-25 highly detailed, beautifully sculpted miniatures to represent your unique team of cyber personalities and affiliated programs.

- Engage in a daring struggle for control of an ever-shifting landscape, set against a backdrop of mind-crushing quantum noise.

-  Struggle for control of the psychological reality itself, while managing your resources to push your collective and to manipulate the terrain to its utmost.

- Revel in unmitigated glory.

Setting the scene: BAO narrative event part 1

Here is the first installment of the BAO narrative events Back story.

A prelude to War

Varro the Forge Lord watched his allies’ ships burn as he stood on the command deck of the Slaughter class cruiser the Hateful Song. The reinforcements from Battlefleet Sargon had arrived and were decimating the Chaos Marine fleet. Denari would soon be firmly back under control of the Imperial forces, although the Ork threat will haunt them for generations.

He thought to himself “you served your purpose; I have what I came to Denari for, die well my twisted brothers.”

The Hateful Song was moving out-system using the systems asteroid belt to cover its exodus. Varro commanded the comms officer to contact the Warlord on the Eater of Souls immediately and relay the following message:

**Priority One Alpha: Hateful Song to the Eater of Souls
Objective captured: STC for the Ferrum pattern Teleportarium recovered
Enroute to rendezvous point
End message**

As the Hateful Song cleared the asteroid belt, Varro leaned back in the command thrown and voxed the navigator. “Set course for the Korath System; make transition to the Warp immediately.”

Sixty-four hours later the Hateful Song transitioned out of the Warp on the edge of the Korath System, the rendezvous point for all the ships Red Crusade fleet.

The Red Crusade had been organized and headed by the Warlord of the Soul Reapers, but the bulk of the participants were from other Traitor Warbands, many derived directly from the original Traitor Legions.

The previous battle on Denari was as much a distraction as it was a mission to capture the STC data for the Teleportarium. It would send the dogs of the Imperium rushing to a Sector that would be far from the actual fighting. For the Korath System is in the Seefra sector just beyond the fringes of Imperial space. The Astonomicon is very weak here making for reinforcement difficult at the best of times.

As the Hateful Song joined the armada Varro was impressed with how many of their Traitorous Brothers had answered the call. He was exceptionally pleased to see no less than twenty ships in the livery of the Iron Warriors. Their siege craft will be exceptionally helpful.

At the heart of the armada was the ancient battlebarge the Eater of Souls, flagship of Warlord Krüg the master of the Soul Reapers and Lord of this Crusade.

Surrounding the flagship in close proximity were four black ships so twisted that their original form was unrecognizable. They were daemon vessels each one carrying a herald representing each of the Dark Gods. These ships have been consecrated with the blood of thousands innocents as a means to anchor the Daemon herald’s of the gods to the material world for the duration of the campaign.

Varro arrived on the strategium of the Eater of Souls just as the Warlords war council was ending. Krüg’s blood was pumping fast through his twin hearts at the thought of conquest and bloodshed. Varro briefed Krüg on the Danari conflict and while Krüg was not happy at his forces being repelled from the world, at least his Forge Lord retrieved the STC data.

Varro went on the explain that he could retrofit a single Teleportarium on the Eater of Worlds with stolen parts from the Adeptus Mechanicus facility he had acquired on Denari. Krüg smiled manically at the thought of making precision teleportation strikes upon the weakling Imperium. “Make it happen, Varro and failure is not an option” growled Krüg.

Krüg strode onto the bridge of the Eater of Souls commanding the comms officer to send the following message:

**Priority One Alpha: Eater of Souls to the Void Raptor
Aris, set course to the Persiet System immediately! Scout the defensive capabilities of the system, with the fifth planet as a priority target.
End message**

No reply was sent or needed as Krüg watched the Void Raptor and her escorts head for the jump point on the left of the view screen. Krüg was lost in thought “the Seeker has been set to task, now I must consult Xusia to see what the old sorcerer’s foresight has in store for us.”
